Priti Patel Implies Obtaining BNO Means Loyalty to Britain!英內政大臣:揸BNO表示效忠大英!By Chapman Chen, HKBNews

Implications of "Launch of the Hong Kong British National (Overseas) route" -- Statement made by Home Secretary Priti Patel on 1 February 2021

Priti Patel: "As I have said throughout the development of this route, this is absolutely the right thing to do, in recognition of the historic commitment of the UK to the people of Hong Kong, and specifically to those who elected to retain their ties to the UK through obtaining BN(O) status."

Interpretation: For Hongkongers to obtain BNO status means to retain their ties to the UK, and the UK will take care of them, probably by invoking Section 4B of the British Nationality Act, now that China is depriving BNO holders of their right to reside in Hong Kong, which is an violation of the memorandum on the Chinese side of the Sino-British Joint Declaration.

Patel: "BN(O) status holders and their dependents are the second group after EEA nationals to have access to this new digital process, which further upholds our commitment to them."

Interpretation: the BNO passport is not just a travel document but an identity equivalent to European nationals.

"In addition to the new route for BN(O) status holders, individuals from Hong Kong will also be able to apply to come to the UK under the terms of the new points-based immigration system, which will enable them to come to the UK in a wider range of professions and at a lower general salary threshold than in the past. They are also able to use student routes and have access to the Youth Mobility Scheme."

Interpretation: The BNO Visa application process is by no means a points-based immigration system. The latter is meant for "individuals from Hong Kong" who are not entitled to a BNO, someone like Edward Leung Tin-Kei, who was bon in China. The threshold for them to move to the UK as students or professionals is now lowered.

"HMG is working to ensure BN(O) status holders who take up this offer feel fully supported and welcomed when starting their life in the UK. I look forward to welcoming applications from those individuals who wish to make the UK their home."

Interpretation: many Hongkongers will be forced to flee Hong Kong and make the UK their home.
