KFC’s Dancing Beheaded Chickens: A Vegan Theology Response. By Dr Chapman Chen

The top-left inset within the larger image of Jesus and Mary Magdalene is a capscreen from an advertisement reel by KFC Spain on X (Twitter), grotesquely depicting beheaded carcasses of fried chickens dancing for human amusement. From a Vegan Theology perspective, this is profoundly disturbing. The violated bodies of God’s sentient creatures are here transformed into commercial entertainment, mockery, and spectacle.
As animal rights advocate Tash Peterson rightly observed in 2026, “Non-vegans abuse animals, mock them, and treat them like objects” (note 1). This advertisement seems to embody precisely that tragic reality.
Yet both God and Jesus Christ present the opposite vision: one of shelter, compassion, and protection for vulnerable creatures. Jesus laments:
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.”— Matthew 23:37 (NIV)
Likewise, the Psalmist describes God in similar maternal imagery:
“He shall cover thee with His feathers, and under His wings shalt thou trust.” — Psalm 91:4 (KJV)
How tragic, then, that people who profess faith in God and Christ still choose to consume chickens and egg products, while even tolerating advertisements that perversely mock the beheaded bodies of these innocent creatures.
The scale of this violence is staggering. Globally, over 70 billion chickens are slaughtered every year for meat, with chickens comprising the overwhelming majority of land animals killed for food. In the UK alone, around 1.1 billion meat chickens were slaughtered in 2022.
The egg industry adds another hidden atrocity: newly hatched male chicks, though entirely innocent, are routinely exterminated because they cannot lay eggs and are considered commercially useless. Globally, estimates commonly place this at around 6–7 billion male chicks killed annually through maceration, gassing, or other methods. In the UK, the estimate is approximately 29–32 million male chicks each year.
Let us honour God and Christ not merely in words, but in compassion and action.
Honour God and Christ — go vegan.
