According to Oxford University theology professor Rev. Andrew Linzey, there can be no liberation theology without the liberation of animals or without a God determined to liberate every being suffering oppression (Linzey 1995:72). Linzey (1995:63) argues that liberation theology should cover not only oppressed races, social classes and genders but also oppressed animals. He uses the word “oppress” in exactly the way suggested by The Oxford Dictionary: to “overwhelm with superior weight or numbers of irresistible power…[to] govern tyrannically, keep under by coercion, subject to continual cruelty or injustice.” And this is exactly what we do to animals as “we hunt, ride, shoot, fish, wear, eat, cage, trap, exhibit, factory farm and experiment upon [trillions] of animals every year” (Linzey 1995:73).
