In his 2019-11-15 sermon delivered at Evangelical Free Church of China Lam Tin Church, Joseph LU Yuen-shun, a member of Evangel Seminary (Hong Kong)'s board of directors, in connection w/ the current HK Time Revolution, preached that to go against the HK Government was to go against God, citing Romans 13. God Himself, however, raised up leaders such as Gideon, Ehud, Jepthah, Samson, and Deborah to throw off tyrannical governments, leaders praised in the Book of Judges and Hebrews 11: 32. Ehud actually assassinated King Eglon of Moab, who oppressed Israel. (By Chapman Chen, HKBNews)
Also, a Scriptural perspective generally held by the founding fathers of America was that although God did not condone an offensive war, he did permit militant self-defense, e.g., "Remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses" (Nehemiah 4:13-14 KJV) ; "I will encamp about mine house because of the army...and no oppressor shall pass through them any more" (Zechariah 9:8 KJV).
No doubt, Paul asks Christians to "be subject unto the higher powers" (Romans 13:1 KJV), but by "higher powers", he does not mean any authorities, but only "the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil." (Romans 13:4 KJV). Peter also advises similarly:- "Submit yourselves to...governors...that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well" (1 Peter 2: 13-14 KJV).
