It is the cross that vegans bear. We oppose oppression of the weak. We oppose the killing of innocents. We live in a world of oppression, greed, murder, war, raping and pillaging, toxicity and poison. Yet through all this vegans continue to strive to educate others as to the horrors that are attributed to the choice on their plate. Vegans know that if the world were vegan, rape and greed would end, love would replace war, toxicity and poisons would be things of the past as would murder.

This is the cross we bear, the knowledge of what is possible and knowing that we are the smallest minority trying to make the biggest change. We are unorganized, unfunded, uneducated as to communicating or conducting a strategic plan. We come from every walk in life, we come from every different stature in society. We come in every different language, every different color. We come from every different political and social position. We come from every continent and every country.

We do not know each other; many of us are outcasts or recluses. But we all at every opportunity try to make the world better for those without a voice. We do not get paid, we do not expect thanks. But what we surely should have is respect. The next time someone goes out of their way to educate you to the horrors of the animal agriculture industry and the deleterious effects on the environment and the human body, have the decency to treat every animal rights activist with respect. That is all we ask. Respect.

[Editor’s note: Animal rights activists are often subjected to ridicule, prosecution and persecution in this world. For instance, Australian vegan activist Tash Peterson has been arrested and fined numerous times, and often harassed, verbally abused, and even physically assaulted by anti-vegans. Californian vegan activist Zoe Rosenberg was recently sentenced to 90 days in jail for rescuing four sick chickens from a slaughterhouse. They all bear the cross of the Vegan Christ, though they may not be Christians in name.]
