Pro-CCP Hong Kong Churches' Prayers for Extradition Law. By Chapman Chen, Hong Kong Bilingual News

Updated: May 21, 2019

Seven major pro-Communist China Hong Kong Churches support the controversial Extradition Law amendment. They all side with the government and either pray that God help to dispel the public's concerns about the Extradition Law so that justice can be done, or praise the authorities for manifesting justice in putting forth the Bill. The six churches are Hong Kong Christian Council (HKCC), Hong Kong Anglican Church (HKSKH), North Point Alliance Church, HK EFCC Taikoo Shing Church, Wing Kwong Pentecostal Holiness Church, EFCC Kong Fok Church, and CNEC Fellowship Church. (Founded in 1954, HKCC is the ecumenical body of Christian churches, organizations and institutions in HK.) Below please find the prayer request of each of the churches.

Massive Protests against Extradition Law

On April 28, 130 thousand Hongkongers took to the street and protested against the extradition law. On May 11, pan-democracy lawmakers clashed with pro-establishment lawmakers in the Legco when the latter tried to illegitimately replace the pan-democracy chairman of the Bill Committee.

Loophole or Pretext?

The Hong Kong Government claims that the aim of the proposed amendment to the extradition law is to fill up a loophole in the HK legal system, ostensibly highlighted by a case of murder, in which a Hong Kong man, after allegedly killing his Hong Kong girlfriend while traveling in Taiwan, returned to Hong Kong. The Taiwanese authorities, however, have disapproved of the amendment. Many Hongkongers are worried that the real purpose of the amendment is to make it possible to transfer anybody in Hong Kong, Hongkongers and Westerners alike, whom the CCP dislikes, to China, whose record of rule of law is abhorrent, to say the least. A recent USCC report has warned that should the extradition law be passed, America may cancel the Hong Kong Policy Act.

Hong Kong Christian Council: HK Govt Aims at Manifesting Justice w/ Extradition Law. By Chapman Chen, HKBNews Pro-CCP HK Anglican Church Sec. Gen. cum CPPCC Member Canon Rev. P. D. Koon Supports Extradition Law. By Chapman Chen, HKBNews

The Hong Kong Christian Council (HKCC) issued on May 12 a statement, stressing that the Hong Kong Government's controversial proposed Extradition Law aims at "manifesting justice and protecting Hong Kong, so that HK will not become a haven for fugitives." Founded in 1954, HKCC is the ecumenical body of Christian churches, organizations and institutions in Hong Kong. Former HKCC General Secretary Po Kam Cheong traveled in 2017 to Beijing and reported to The United Front Work Department, Chinese Communist of China. Current HKCC General Secretary Lo Lung Kwong (2018) said, "The more you fight; the more you lose. Hongkongers adopting an antagonistic approach will only make China's governing of HK more and more stringent."

2 Contradictory Statements Co-exist

After being severely and widely criticized, the Social Justice and People's Livelihood Committee under HKCC issued on May 14 another statement requesting the authorities to postpone the Bill. The two contradictory statement co-exist on HKCC's website.

"Expectations and Appeals for Fugitive Offenders Ordinance Amendment" is excerpted and translated as follows.

"As a result of the recent murder case in Taiwan, the Hong Kong SAR Government has become aware of the limitations of the current Fugitive Offenders Ordinance of HK. The government has thus proposed an amendment, with a view to manifesting justice and protecting Hong Kong, so that HK will not become a haven for fugitives. However, different organizations in our society have significant reservations and concerns about the contents of the amendment, which have triggered off intense controversies showing signs of continual fermentation.....

The church is a community of faith advocating peace with God and peace among people. At this moment, we want to be the son of peace and the servant of reconciliation. We, therefore, invite all Hong Kong believers to pray for Hong Kong and plead with God to gift related government officials and lawmakers with wisdom so that they will be able to find a plan that is compatible with Hong Kong people's well-being, making Hong Kong become a city where security and freedom are comprehensively protected."

Provincial Secretary General of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui (HK Anglican Church) cum Member of Beijing Municipal Committee of The Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Canon Peter Douglas Koon supports the controversial Extradition Law (Sing Tao Daily 2019-5-20). "The Church's stance is that culprits have to be brought to justice," Koon asserts, "If the Extradition Law is not amended, the suspect of the Taiwan murder case will get away with it, and this goes against justice." Koon opines that the whole things has come so suddenly that the public is not psychologically prepared for the amendment. "The HK Government thus had better explain more to the public." Koon also believes that Christians will not be extradited to China for religious reasons.
